None of us could have predicted at the beginning of this year that schools would be closed, business put on hold and that as a nation we would be confined to our homes as a result of an unusual new virus emerging from the Far East.
Over the last few weeks, parents have become teachers, teachers have become carers and many of those who have been furloughed from their jobs have become volunteers for the vulnerable. We now call supermarket workers and delivery drivers heroes, give thanks to those on the front line from the safety of our doorsteps each week, and are socially distanced from friends and loved ones. For those families who are in crisis, these are exceptionally stressful and worrying times and it is hard to imagine the difficulties being faced by those who may have limited space or capacity to cope, or who may be lacking their usual support mechanisms.
As therapists, our team are considered to be key workers and as such we have found innovative ways to continue to support the children in our care throughout the crisis. We have developed ways to deliver virtual therapeutic sessions, delivered creative play packs, made ‘keep in touch’ phone calls with children in our care and have continued to provide face to face support where possible in schools that remain open. We have provided learning support tools to our schools to help them prepare for the emotional health of their school community when the school closures begin to lift.
One of the biggest and most rewarding developments for Clear Sky is that we have created a series of free parent resources, including ideas, games and videos to help parents who are at home through the lockdown with their children. The resources are aimed at reducing stress, encouraging creative thinking, movement, focus and spontaneity. Subscribers receive the free resources by email three times per week, and we are delighted at the time of writing to have reached over 5,000 individuals in our first launch.
As part of our Institute for Play and Attachment, we had intended to commence work on our parent resources later this summer, but the sudden need for help meant that we had to respond swiftly to get resources out sooner than expected. We have been overwhelmed with the positive response we have received and also by the encouragement we have had from funders who have really got behind this effort to support families at this time.

We’ve also been massively impressed by the entire fundraising community who have come up with so many initiatives to support charities like ours through these difficult times. Without the generosity of donors, our work simply would not be possible.
